In 2012, Melbourne-based producer Roland Tings seemed to materialize out of nowhere, mysteriously catching the attention of beloved LA dance imprint, 100% Silk. After releasing his first-ever EP with label, the producer (real name Rohan Newman) became the go-to guy for Melbourne's most raucous house parties and basement jams. His humble attitude never changed in the fast years that followed as Internasjonal, the label helmed by Norwegian alt-disco king Prins Thomas, signed his debut full length in 2015 and Triple J crowned it their Feature Album of the year, an almost unheard of feat for an outsider house record of hyperactive repetition. Shortly thereafter Newman found himself an Australian festival staple and was handpicked to tour alongside Nick Murphy (fka Chet Faker) and AlunaGeorge.
Two years later and in the wobbly embrace of 2017, Roland Tings is now set to unveil his latest body of work – an undeniably solid six-tracker titled Each Moment A Diamond that illustrates his unique ability to combine contemplative dance music with propulsive pop cuts.
Although the songs on Diamond read as effortless examples of a
producer in sync with his creative core, they’re also the result of a
sturdy creative routine. Approaching music like a 9-5 last year, Newman rented a studio in the industrial backstreets of Melbourne where he spent each day dedicated to his craft. Having decided that he needed the steady arm of a repetitive schedule, every morning Newman ate the same breakfast, rode his bike to the studio along the same route, and hung with the same friends at familiar places. The routine was deliberate and the results were fruitful.
